Rep. Negrete McLeod Votes Against Ryan Budget

Statement

Today, Rep. Gloria Negrete McLeod (D-Montclair) released the following statement following her vote in opposition to the Ryan Budget, a budget proposal that would impact small business growth, cut Medicare for seniors, stop investments in education and cost American jobs:

"Today I voted 'No' to the Ryan Budget proposal because it is unworkable and will hurt middle class families.

"Under the Ryan Budget, seniors will see the end of the Medicare guarantee and be forced to pay more for preventive services and prescription drugs. This proposal fails to address the high costs of health care and instead shifts costs onto seniors and future retirees.

"This budget turns its back on our nation's educational investments. The Ryan Budget would push 170,000 children out of Head Start and leave 29,000 teachers and aides without jobs. It also eliminates mandatory funding for student financial aid like Pell Grants and freezes the maximum amount a student can receive for the next 10 years, although the price for college is going up.

"This budget cuts resources to our nation's small businesses which help create two out of every three net new jobs in the United States. It also raises taxes on middle class families with children by an average of at least $2,000, while giving tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires.

"Cutting funds that help put Americans to work will stunt the growth of our economy. A budget that costs seniors more for health care coverage, denies students education attainment and gives tax breaks to the wealthy while middle class families struggle to pay bills, is a budget I could not support."
